Crypto market rallies as Ethereum=E2=80=99s =E2=80= =98merge=E2=80=99 upgrade approaches final stages

Aft= er several weeks of painful headlines, crypto markets saw some relief to st= art the week. Crypto=E2=80=99s total market cap retook the $1 trillion mark for the = first time since mid-June, while Bitcoin rose above 7% to a monthly high of= $23,536 on Tuesday. But the biggest momentum driver was Ethereum, which sp= iked more than 20% to a high of $1,631 on Monday (up nearly 60% from this t= ime last month). 

The ETH rally began last Friday after Ethereum= developers agreed to an updated September timeline<= /a> for the blockchain=E2=80=99s long-awaited =E2=80=9Cmerge=E2=80=9D upgra= de, which will see it move from its current, energy-intensive =E2=80=9Cproo= f-of-work=E2=80=9D system to a 99% more efficient =E2=80=9Cproof-o= f-stake=E2=80=9D system. The merge is a complex, multi-year technological f= eat that's seen many delays. Here=E2=80=99s how it will work and why it mat= ters.

  • Proof of work is th= e original crypto =E2=80=9Cconsensus mechanism,=E2=80=9D beginning with Bit= coin. It allows many computers across a decentralized network to v= erify transactions =E2=80=94 Ethereum also currently uses this process to c= reate new coins. It requires a huge amount of computer power from virtual = =E2=80=9Cminers=E2=80=9D around the world, who compete to solve a time-cons= uming math puzzle. The winner gets to update the blockchain with the latest= block of verified transactions, and is rewarded with a predetermined amoun= t of new ETH. 
  • With the rise of DeFi and NFTs, Ethereum=E2=80=99s network has endured t= raffic bottlenecks and unpredictable spikes in transaction (gas) fees. Enter proof of stake. Proof-of-stake blockchains =E2=80=94 which = are used by low-fee ETH alternatives like Solana and Avalanche =E2=80=94 are designed to be faster, less resourc= e-intensive, and theoretically more secure. Instead of requiring energy-int= ensive mining, proof-of-stake networks rely on =E2=80=9Cvalidators=E2=80=9D= that contribute their own ETH as collateral in exchange for a chance to up= date the blockchain with the latest verified transactions and earn newly mi= nted tokens.   • So, what exactly is being merged? Ethereum= =E2=80=99s upgrade will combine the current proof-of-work blockchain with a= proof-of-stake blockchain called the Beacon Chain, which has been running since 2020. Once complete, the Beacon Chain will= take over the process of validating new transactions. Hundreds of thousand= s of validators have already staked more than 13 million ETH on the Beacon = Chain. 
  • On T= hursday, ETH developer Tim Beiko suggested = the upgrade will happen the week of September 19, but that date =E2=80=9Cisn=E2=80=99t final.=E2=80=9D The merge has been in the works since 2015 and has seen repeated delay= s (In May, ETH co-founder Vitalik Buterin said August was the goal). However, the recent succes= sful launches of proof of stake on the Ropsten and Sep= olia testnets seem to have inspired faith in the new timeline, which in= cludes August=E2=80=99s final trial on the Goerli testnet before September= =E2=80=99s main upgrade.

Why it matters=E2=80=A6 Since Thursday=E2=80=99s E= thereum devel= oper meeting, ETH has rallied an impressive 30%, indicating increased c= onfidence in the new timeline. In another sign of strength for ETH, the cry= ptocurrency=E2=80=99s options markets on Monday indicated more bullish than b= earish bets, signaling upside momentum for the first time in six months. An= d maybe the most significant (but hardest to quantify) force at play? Narra= tive. After weeks of adverse headlines about struggling crypto firms, infla= tion, and the Fed=E2=80=99s rate hikes, the reality that the long-awaited u= pgrade to the second-biggest cryptocurrency=E2=80=99s blockchain is near mi= ght have injected some much-needed optimism into the market. As CoinDesk=E2= =80=99s Nathaniel Whittemore notes, =E2=80=9COne of the ver= y few narratives that some contend has the power to shift the crypto market= s around is the Ethereum merge.=E2=80=9D
